From John 15:5 — "without Me you can do nothing" — Dr. Nana Boadum calls the church to put Jesus at the center of it all, not fit Him into our own agenda. The portrait is teenage David: minding sheep while God prepared the oil, found because his heart was set on the Lord. The Spirit comes upon the surrendered and departs from the self-willed — and nobody, young or old, is exempt from the outpouring.
The seven movements
- The anchor: abide or do nothing. "I am the vine, you are the branches… without Me you can do nothing." All things are from Him, through Him, and to Him — the tragedy is going through the motions with Christ at the margins (John 15:5; Romans 11:36).
- "I have found David." God searches for hearts set on Him — and found a teenager. The 12:20 generation take note: David was anointed years before the age of responsibility (twenty, per Numbers 1), because the Lord watches how you conduct yourself on the way to school, at work, in the field (Acts 13:22; Psalm 89:20-21).
- The heart, not the stature. Samuel would have crowned Eliab on sight; the Lord refused seven brothers. "Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" — and some hearts apply for positions God has already declined (1 Samuel 16:6-10).
- Faithful in the field. David wasn't home sulking as the youngest — he was out with the sheep, fighting lions and bears with the Lord, never alone. You don't need to fit in; you need to be in Christ. The whole house stood until the shepherd boy arrived, and the Spirit came upon him from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:11-13).
- A God who brags on His own. "Have you considered my servant Job?" — God boasts over hearts He can trust, hedge and all. Job passed the test; so can a people whose confession is "better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere" (Job 1:8; Psalm 84:10).
- One thing. Not ten goals — one: to dwell in the house of the Lord, behold His beauty, inquire in His temple. Let no one despise your youth; be the example in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity — and don't despise yourself either (Psalm 27:4; 1 Timothy 4:12).
- The Spirit on all flesh. Joel's promise, fulfilled at Pentecost, covers sons and daughters, young visions and old dreams — no partiality. The warning sits in the same chapter: the Spirit came on David and departed from Saul. Like David restoring the ark, like Simeon and Anna in the temple, keep the Presence central at every age (Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17; 1 Samuel 16:13-14; Luke 2:25-38).
Walk away with this
Don't waste it — your teenage years or your later ones. Set your heart where God is searching, make Psalm 27:4 your motto, and restore the Ark to the center: Jesus over everything, from this Sunday through the rest of the year.
